Overview
Tom Joyce spent 25 years with the Portland Police Department building an expertise in criminal investigations and forensics.
As an evidence technician in the department’s crime laboratory, Tom specialized in reconstructing crimes through the use of forensics. As a detective sergeant, Tom was the supervisor of the crimes against property unit and later the crimes against people unit. Tom also supervised the department’s crime laboratory.
He has overseen the investigation of incidents to include, but not limited to: theft, burglary, harassment, missing persons, domestic violence, assault, aggravated assault, robbery, sexual assault, suspicious deaths, homicide and police officer involved shootings.
As a detective sergeant, Joyce earned many commendations for his investigative work during his years with the police department.
Retiring from the police department in 2004, Tom is now a professor and department chair of the criminal justice program at Southern Maine Community College. Among the courses that he teaches, Tom instructs students in criminal investigation and crime scene reconstruction.
