The following is general licensing information. Please visit the website for specific licensing detailed information, application forms, insurance requirements, education and training, fees, and any special licensing requirements.
• Age: Must be at least 18 years old, because less than 18 years are not eligible.
• Residency: Must be a citizen or legal resident of the United States.
• Character: May not be under indictment for felony convictions.
• May not have ever been convicted of a felony.
• May not have named in an outstanding arrest warrant
• May not be registered sex as an offender.
• May not be on parole or probation, community supervision or work furlough, on home arrest, on release on any other basis.
• May not have any misdemeanor convictions in the last 5 years for violent acts, theft, fraud or dishonesty, Arson, sexual misconduct, domestic violence as in Arizona Revised Statutes ARS (§13-3601) or similar, or narcotics violations Arizona Revised Statutes ARS (§13, Chapter No. 34, or similar). This holds even if the conviction was set aside.
• May not have been adjudicated mentally incompetent or found to constitute a danger to self or others, Arizona Revised Statutes ARS (§36-540).
• May not have a disability, which makes you incapable of performing necessary functions of the job even with reasonable accommodation from the employer, Arizona Revised Statutes ARS (§41-1461).
• Has never been convicted of misconduct involving a deadly weapon as provided in Arizona Revised Statutes ARS (§13-3102).
• Has never been convicted of attempting to act as a Private Investigator without a license.
• Degree: No specific degree is necessary, but many seek law enforcement, criminal justice, or similar education to enhance their abilities.
• Experience: Before getting licensure you must work as a Private Investigator Employee for at least 3 years under an ADPS licensed agency. The registration costs $72 for this step but is often paid by the employer.
• Written Exams: Arizona does not have any exams for Private Investigators.
• Fees: The fees $250 for your Arizona Private Investigator license, the PI’s application, and $400 for the PI’s license.
• Registration Required: Your registration application must be included a copy of your government ID card, a fingerprint card, and a photo passport-style.
• Maintaining Private Investigator License: You should renew your license every year, which includes your $250 fee and bond.
